The Apple-owned Dark Sky weather app has been removed from the US App Store ahead of schedule, according to reports.
In March 2020, Apple bought Dark Sky and has since then been adding pieces of the app to Weather for the iphone (and iPad in the future).
After the acquisition, Dark Sky was still available for purchase as a standalone weather app. However, earlier this year the app’s developers said it would no longer be available on iOS after December 31, 2022.
The blog Dark Sky recommended that when the app became unavailable at the end of 2022, previously purchased versions would cease providing weather data, but as of now, it continues to function. It’s not entirely clear if Apple pulled Dark Sky prematurely or if it had a problem.
The Dark Sky app may be shutting down soon, but the API and website will continue to function until March 2023. If you’re a developer who uses the Dark Sky API, don’t worry! You can transition over to Apple’s WeatherKit API with no problem.
