Thailand has teamed up with China to provide tablet computers to the kids in Thai schools. Thailand is buying up to 900,000 tablets from China via a government-to-government contract for a One Tablet per Child scheme. Huawei, ZTE and Lenovo are reported to be the three prospective Chinese suppliers for this tablet. An inside source said Huawei is likely to win the contract as the company had offered the lowest tablet prices of US$60 per unit …

After the widely regarded success of Xiaomi Phone and its collaboration with China Telecom, CEO Lei Jun is thinking deeper to make his next move. With no evident mode of surprise, the company had suddenly ventured into the tablet market. Japan company Mobile In Style has launched a 7 inch tablet device this week and it is co-developed with Xiaomi. The new 7 inch Eden Tab and the Xiaomi Phone shares the same Original Design Manufacturer (ODM), but the tablet wasn’t able to inherit Xiaomi’s famous MIUI software …

Intel has been trying to get into the mobile devices segment for a long time now but they have finally managed to do it with the Lenovo K800 smartphone and IdeaPad K2110 after an announcement at Intel’s CES keynote. Lenovo announced the industry’s first multi-mode notebook — IdeaPad YOGA, with a 360 degree flip-and-fold design. It opens like a normal laptop but can then flip backwards to become a tablet. The intuitive design has optimized the user experience of both an ultrabook and tablet across four different usage modes – notebook, tablet, stand and tent. YOGA is the industry’s thinnest convertible ultrabook measuring 16.9mm thin at 1.47kg, powered by Intel Core i7 processor with Windows 8 operating system, and it supports eight hours of battery life with up to 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD … Update: More photo added.

Chinese brand aigo is planning to release a new tablet with 3D diaplay. The new device will be running Android Ice Cream Sandwich and it is the first naked-eye 3D tablet that allow user to see a stereoscopic 3D movies without wearing eye glasses. The tablet has equipped with a high resolution LCD screen which is similar to Nintendo 3DS which capable to switch between 2D and 3D modes. The new 3D pad will be announce in February, main specification and price still unknown yet. Apple once has a patent filed in 2010, hints to create a 3D display for its iPad tablet. Now the Chinese company might has preempted the new segment …

The Indian government has invited Taiwan-based PC makers to set up their facilities in the country, and help with the production of the low-cost Aakash tablets. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), the brain behind the cheapest tablet in the world, said that it is looking forward to team up with Taiwan-based firms, as the Indian government works towards its goal of distributing 200 million Aakash units to students across the country over the next three years. Aided by Taiwan makers’ manufacturing capability, it will be possible to lower the selling price of Aakash tablet PCs to US$35 …
Asus is getting ready to sell this blatant copy of Apple’s Smart Cover for their soon-to-be released Tranformer Prime tablet. Yeap, it’s much the same deal as with the Smart Cover, save for the slightly different folding pattern. It flexes into a more complicated 3D shape to prop the Prime in place.
