
The China Consumers Association issued a statement pointing out “unfair” clauses in the maintenance terms for Apple’s iPhone. The Association said that Apple had ‘unfair’ repair clauses regarding the use of spare parts, the ownership of old spare parts and compensation for repairs. One of Apple’s repair clauses requires customers allow Apple to use either new or retreaded spare parts in repair, and the replaced spare parts are returned to Apple. That means the company is taking a piece of defected equipment already paid by the customer and reselling those parts after they are repaired to other customers. The Association said that Apple is breaking national repair and return rules regarding computers by using refurbished components …

Meizu has announced that they are releasing refurbished models of the dual core Meizu MX and the older M9 model. The refurbished MEIZU MX 16GB will be available at 1999 yuan (US$313), and the M9 8GB will sell as low as 1299 yuan (US$204). MEIZU Certified RE devices are refurbished versions of MEIZU smartphones recalled within 15 days of purchase. They are given new IMEI and serial numbers, and have no difference in functionality compared to brand new devices. All refurbished models will come with a full 12 month warranty and will also be eligible for the upcoming Meizu Flyme ROM (Meizu’s customized Android UI) …
Police in Shanghai raided an apartment and seized 1.1 million yuan (about US$174,892) worth of goods for refurbishing iPhones. Yes, according to Chinese media Eastday, the police found an entire assembly line that was run by a 53-year-old man who employed 14 young Chinese workers to produce and sell refurbished iPhones with fake parts.

Sales of smartphones have exploded in China, but some may be paying brand-new prices for refurbished devices. Used smartphones are being resold as new to unsuspecting consumers in China. Small retailers will buy dozens of used smartphones each week from Taobao, the Chinese e-commerce platform similar to ebay. These shops repair, clean, refurbish and polish used mobile phones before reselling them. Some of these products even end up in leading electronics shopping malls, which sell them as new item at full price …
