
Those who have been waiting to buy a cheap Nexus 4 in Hong Kong would probably get upset by now, because some troubling reports are starting to appear. A poster from Wilson (a smartphone vendor) showed up several days ago that a 16GB version Nexus 4 will be selling at HKD$4398 (US$567), meaning it will be twice as expensive as Google’s online offering. In addition, LG has invited Hong Kong media to an announcement on the 11 December, it’s expecting to hear the white color version Nexus 4 to be announced as well.

It’s not just iPhones that are blowing up these days. A week ago, a Chinese netizen found out his Nexus 7 spontaneously combusted and exploded overnight while charging, and this is believed to be the first case here of a Nexus 7 going boom. The way it exploded is just the same as the iPhone — the shell deformed and the built-in battery swollen.

Google has just unveiled a mini tablet co-branded with Taiwan’s Asus and priced to compete with Amazon’s Kindle Fire device. Google has previously worked with hardware manufacturers HTC and Samsung to produce co-branded Android smartphones under the Nexus brand. The new Nexus 7 tablet would be its first such tablet device. Google only gave the Taiwan PC maker four months to build the product. The task is to build a high-end tablet that could sell for just only US$200. Asus Chairman Jonney Shih said the internet giant can be kind of demanding, their company’s engineers felt it’s like torture …

According to the report from Taiwan media, Google and Asus’ jointly developed 7-inch Nexus tablet is set to be unveiled at Google I/O, a developer event that will be hosted at San Francisco next week, with its initially price to be set at US$199 (1,262 yuan). Due to its low price, the 7-inch Nexus tablet only supports a Wi-Fi connection and does not feature a back-side webcam, but will equip with a front-side webcam for video conference. The device will also be preloaded with Google’s Chrome browser, with compatibility issues having been resolved to allow smoother operation on mobile apps. It will be available in the retail channel in July with the device’s total shipments expected to reach at least three million units. It will be interesting to see how the performance of the quad-core Tegra 3 system-on-chip on this low budget tablet …

Chinese search giant Baidu has created an entire Nexus S ROM, replacing Google’s suite of services with its own. The ROM has been built to accompany Baidu’s cloud services push, and it allows mobile owners to fully ‘Baiduize’ their Android phone, giving them to access a range of the company’s web services, which include music, maps, apps and photo album. The ROM will be officially announced this week. Currently it only supports the Google Nexus S but it will expand to cover selected Android phones (ICS) in time …

At Nvidia’s annual meeting of investors last week, the Taiwanese chipmaker revealed the idea of a new platform called ‘Kai’, it isn’t just a piece of hardware, but a plan to democratize its quad-core Tegra 3 system-on-chip. Nvidia wants to offer Android 4.0 tablets that are more powerful than the Kindle Fire at the same price point. Nvidia will use cheaper DDR3L memory for this new platform and also the DirectTouch and Prism low-power display technologies which the company has developed. The first tablets on sale will be at this summer …
