
There are more handset companies cranking out new smartphones in China than we can count. But Xiaomi is one of the few companies that actually has a little bit of name recognition outside of China, thanks in part to the company’s popular MIUI skin for Android. The smartphone cult hero, called out by CNN last year, has given us some pretty great hardware with good price. This year, the company seem not ready to give us the Xiaomi Phone 3 with 5-inch Full HD display, so they just did a hardware upgrade to their flagship phone from last year, which Apple will also be doing this year with their iPhone 5. The unveiling of Xiaomi Phone 2S and low-price 2A have not given us too much excitement, Xiaomi company is trying to make their MIUI custom ROM to be the spot light. Also, the announcement event is no longer mirroring Apple’s WWDC, Xiaomi is now showing its own characteristic and brand image. Xiaomi even produce a short film about the dream of a young racer, to express the entrepreneurial story behind the startup Chinese phone company. Most surprisingly, their boss is now dressing like Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos …
Poking fun at ally North Korea and Kim Jong-Un’s Nuclear ambitions is the latest stunt by China’s Kingsoft to promote its new ‘Lieboa’ (literally means Cheetah in Chinese) web browser. The software company claims Liebao browser is three times faster than Google’s Chrome. Kingsoft is well known in China for its anti-virus software and for its free alternative to Microsoft Office — Kingsoft Office. China tech giant Tencent has a major stake in Kingsoft and Lei Jun, the creator of Xiaomi Phone, is the co-founder and chairman of the company. Since the new browser launch, there has been little written about the browser outside of China because the lack of English interface. And with recent China hacking scandals and accusations that Chinese telecoms companies are untrustworthy, the Chinese browser will certainly remain only in China market. Maybe, North Korea do really need it for their rocket launch …

To survive in the fierce competition of Chinese mobile market, the phone makers in China are trying to imitate everything from Apple. China’s homegrown smartphone brand Xiaomi is increasingly looking like Apple. After the launch of Xiaomi Mi-Two, the company has announced the release of its latest product — Xiaomi Box. It’s a set top box that looks very alike to Apple TV, but offers at a very tempting price. Although China has a flood of cheap Android TV dongles and set-top boxes , Xiaomi Box is still arguably competitive.

Yesterday, Xiaomi held “Mi-Fan festival” to celebrate the second anniversary with all the Mi-Fans. The event endured for six hours and offered various Xiaomi’s accessories with discount to thanks its customers. Apart from the announcement of China Unicom has sold over million units of Xiaomi phone, Li Wan Qiang, another founder of Xiaomi Tech, has disclosed the second-gen Xiaomi phone is in the work and the company is targeting to sell around four million units this year.

A Xiaomi fanboy probably has inspired Xiaomi’s CEO to make its devices compatible with multiple operating systems after he successfully installed Windows XP on Xiaomi M1. During a conference, Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun disclosed the company is in discussion with Microsoft to develop a Windows Phone-based Xiaomi phone. Also, an inside source claimed Xiaomi is planning to unveil a 1GHz dual-core smartphone that priced as low as 899 yuan ($145).
Update: Lei jun said on Weibo that they’re not planning to make a $145 low-end Xiaomi phone, they’ll rather work on the high-end category instead. Sorry guys, forget about that incredible rumor.

China smartphone brand Xiaomi has raised its shipment target from 2 to 5 million phones this year. CEO Lei Jun has told the Taiwanese media that the company will only launch one smartphone model this year, which offer different versions and colors. Xiaomi boasted that its products are reasonably priced while the function and specification are similar to the iPhone. The company is selling their MiOne smartphone for only 1,999 yuan (US$316), that doesn’t mean they are belonged to the low end market …

After the widely regarded success of Xiaomi Phone and its collaboration with China Telecom, CEO Lei Jun is thinking deeper to make his next move. With no evident mode of surprise, the company had suddenly ventured into the tablet market. Japan company Mobile In Style has launched a 7 inch tablet device this week and it is co-developed with Xiaomi. The new 7 inch Eden Tab and the Xiaomi Phone shares the same Original Design Manufacturer (ODM), but the tablet wasn’t able to inherit Xiaomi’s famous MIUI software …
As we all know, Lei Jun (the founder of Xiaomi Tech) is a big fans of Apple, and he has an ambition to build up his company like Apple. Of course, Steve Jobs inspired him VERY MUCH. He recently told the media, ‘I hope that one day I can change something about the world like Steve Jobs [did].‘. As far as now, Xiaomi M1 is a very popular smartphone in China which nearly passed iPhone to become the best selling phone in China. We will see what Lei Jun could do in the next few years.
