According to IDC’s latest report on global smartphone shipments for Q4 2012, Apple and Samsung continue to dominate the world’s smartphone market, but emerging Chinese companies are starting to climb the ranks. The data show that China’s leading manufacturers, Huawei and ZTE, enjoyed robust year-on-year growth in 2012, placing them among the world’s top five handset makers. Huawei’s market share jumped by 89.5 percent over the year — higher than any other smartphone maker — while ZTE’s share grew by 48.4 percent. Huawei is now ranked third among smartphone vendors with 10.8 million units shipped last quarter, ZTE dropped one spot to number five, on the strength of 9.5 million quarterly shipments …

Huawei Ascend W1 was announced back at CES, it runs on Windows Phone 8 but relies on attractive price tag, rather than high-end specs to impress Chinese customers. The Ascend W1 is now available in China, Huawei’s home country, and is the cheapest WP8-powered smartphone there. It costs 1599 yuan ($260, contract free), which is good 400 yuan cheaper than the Chinese version of the Lumia 620 (about $320). Huawei is also giving some special offering, anyone getting order from Huawei’s official online store will automatically get a 100 yuan discount while supplies last. Huawei Ascend W1 will become available in other countries, including the UK, before the end of Q1 of this year. As for the upcoming W2 for the MWC-bound, it will be a Huawei’s flagship WP8 handset. It comes with a 4.5-inch HD screen, a dual-core CPU of sorts, 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB of on-board storage, an 8 MP camera, and a 2,800 mAh battery.

Say hello to Huawei Ascend D2, the company’s first 5-inch smartphone. It’s slightly smaller than the 6.1-inch Huawei Ascend Mate, but its specs sheet is more endearing than the giant phone. The Huawei Ascend D2 crams a 5-inch 1080p display with a crazy high density of 443 ppi and it has a Huawei’s K3V2 quad-core processor that maxes out at 1.5GHz, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of on board storage under the hood. No card slot for expansion. There is a sharp and fast 13-megapixel camera positioned on its back and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing shooter enables video conversations. You’ll find a beefy 3,000mAh battery that allegedly to provide two-days of battery life. Also, the phone will come with Huawei’s Emotion UI, an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean-based custom ROM, by default.

[UPDATE] Huawei unveiled the 6.1-inch Ascend Mate smartphone (phablet) at CES in Las Vegas today. The Huawei Ascend Mate features a ginormous 6.1-inch 1280 x 720 touchscreen display, making it the largest smartphone in size on the market today. It also has a 241ppi pixel density and arrives complete with “Magic Touch” technology, which means that you can use the phone while wearing non-touchscreen gloves. Taking tips from its Galaxy Note rival, the Huawei Ascend Mate also comes with multitasking support, which means that you can watch a video while typing an email in a “Floating Window” …

Huawei will very soon launch their largest phablet in the market, the Huawei Ascend Mate. Packing a humongous 6.1-inch display, which is made by SONY, with a more than amazing Full HD (1920 x 1080) display resolution and in house K3V3 quad core chipset, we are seeing a flagship phablet device before the official launch at CES. If you think that the large spread 5.5-inch Samsung Galaxy Note II a big smartphone in your pocket, the Ascend Mate happens to be the biggest of all. This handheld device is for those who love using a 7-inch tablet and are enjoying their 5-inch Galaxy Note device. A 6.1-inch display size is certainly the love child of a phablet and a mini tablet …

When HTC introduced the 5-inch 1080p display J-Butterfly, it was clear this would be the new high-spec standard for 2013, replacing the widely used 4.7-inch 720p screen. The latest company to join the party is ZTE (again …), they seems to be quite eager to unveil that Grand S beast smartphone. So much so in fact that the company jumped the gun and spilled some beans on its upcoming FHD 5-inch device ahead of its CES debut. ZTE says it will be the slimmest device at the party, measured at only 6.9-millimeter. The ZTE Z753, as it’s also known, is rumored to feature a quad-core CPU, 2GB RAM, 13-megapixel camera and run on Jelly Bean. We are wondering what is the connection between the Grand S and Nubia Z5, as both phablet has similar specification except for the thickness …

[UPDATE] Chinese smartphone sales are soaring right now and the country is set to surpass the US as the world’s largest smartphone market. Sino-Mr, a leading Chinese market research company, reveal that Chinese branded mobile phones (include 2G features phone and 3G smartphones) had captured over 70 percent of the domestic market share in terms of sales volume by the end of November. It means more and more Chinese consumers are willing to buy domestic phones. A total of 24.59 million mobile phones were sold in China in November, several brands reported a month-on-month growth of within 0.5 percentage points. The data also show us that 11.65 million mobile phones were sold through the telecoms operators …

Apple’s rank in China’s smartphone market, which is set to become the world’s largest this year, fell to No.6 in the third quarter as it faced tough competition from local Chinese brands. China is seeing competition intensifying in its smartphone sector, with global and homegrown vendors trying to outgun one another in terms of price and features. Research firm IDC said Apple saw its third-quarter ranking by market share fall two notches from its position in the second quarter. Its market share by shipments was under 10 percent in the third quarter, when China’s smartphone shipments hit a record high, at more than 60 million units …
