China Mobile, the world’s largest phone company by users, plans to begin fourth-generation wireless service in Hong Kong this month. China Mobile will become the second operator to offer 4G in the Special Administrative Regions. The high-speed service, based on LTE technology, offers maximum download speeds of 100 megabits a second, or as much as 50 times quicker than 3G. The service lets users download games and videos on their phones at the fastest speeds available as operators compete for users in a city where the number of mobile customers is twice the population. Chinese customs authorities have detained 14 suspects in connection with a smuggling case that involved about 400 million yuan (US$63.5 million) worth of photographic and video equipment.
