Iron Man 3 Box Office in China Breaks US$114 Million

The box office of Iron Man 3 in mainland China has successfully exceeded 700 million yuan (US$114 million), becoming the world’s second highest outside North America. The Robert Downey Jr-starrer has become the Top 4 of Hollywood imported films, easily outpacing the “Mission Impossible 4″ and “Kung Fu Panda 2″. Iron Man 3’s remarkable performance had closed relation with the cooperation between Chinese DMG Entertainment Media company and Disney-Marvel. The film exhibits a complementary double win cooperation between the Chinese company and the American Film producer by adding extra Chinese elements to the plot. Several minutes worth of extra China-centric footage — including product placement — was shot only for show in China. Audience reaction has been mixed on the extra scenes so far. Summer movie season is just getting started. “Pacific Rim” is the latest sci-fi film where again, China elements have added to the plot. The adventure set 15 years after gigantic Kaiju monsters emerged and attacked Earth. This event forced nations to develop and engage giant robots, called Jaegers, to defend against the enemy. The China’s Crimson Typhoon, is the big red machine who defends its land from the monsters’ attack. Ironically, the 25-storey-tall robot will be defending Hong Kong, not mainland China. Why ? Because you cannot create a trail of destruction in Beijing or Shanghai, the China’s state censor will take this as ’sensitive scenes’. The US$150 million blockbuster might get banned in China. Hong Kong is a former British colony. Iron Man 3 has arrived today in Hong Kong cinemas. Robert Downey Jr is back in the luxury superhero extravaganza. The film is a joint production of the Disney-owned Marvel Pictures and Beijing-based DMG Entertainment. The overseas openings of the Hollywood blockbuster begin April 24 and upon domestic launch May 3. What we’re watching here in Hong Kong is an international version, which the storyline has not provided too much significant Chinese elements. We may have to watch the movie again in China to find out what are those extra bonus footage, which are specially filmed for the Chinese audience. There is a product placement for Chinese electronics manufacturer TCL, but it’s not obviously to be seen. Tony Stark has smashed one of the Alcatel’s phone (made by TCL) inside the movie. Such a scene is considered to be a rather poor marketing plot for TCL. By the way, we watch the movie in classic 2D version, we just hate 3D glasses …

“Man Of Tai Chi,” a new martial arts film to be the directorial debut of Keanu Reeves, has released its first trailer in China. It is a Chinese-American co-production, took place in contemporary Beijing and will feature Reeves as the villain. The selling point of the film will be of course the Kung-fu action. It’s been 14 years since The Matrix came out and Reeves certainly isn’t a beginner anymore, the 48-year-old actor certainly seems eager to show off his action chops. The real star, though, could be the action choreography by Yuen Woo Ping, the man who created all the fantastic fighting scenes in Matrix. It’ s interesting to see what Keanu Reeves will do in the director’s chair. The actors wanted to capture the fighting scenes with some style and efficacy. The solution is the incorporated Bot and Dolly, a motion control camera that can be programmed to produce the same moves over and over again. It seems China is pretending to be conservative, while high-ranking officials is allowed to invole in “sex party”, but common people are prohibited to watch nude scene. Chinese cinemas have cancelled all screenings of ‘Django Unchained’ just after it premiered in the country. Cinema companies saying screening had been stopped “because of technical reasons”. Industry insiders as saying that nudity prompted the sudden censorship and said it was not clear when the film would return to screens. A moviegoer said on Chinese social media he had been watching the film and “after just one minute it halted !” The film starring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio tells the story of a freed American slave who, supported by a bounty hunter, seeks to rescue his wife from a plantation owner. The film has won two Oscars in February.
