After the 2 times of wages increase and stop giving suicide compensation, Foxconn latest action is suspension of recruitment. According to China Business News report, Foxconn has stopped all recruitment in Shenzhen since May 29th and there is no further detail on when is the next recruitment. Before the suspension, Foxconn recruits about 7,000 to 8,000 new employees per day, and starting from April, the management has already re-adjusted the duration of the overtime work, to a limit of 2 hours per employee. So Foxconn has stopped recruitment and carried out overtime control, will they be able to complete the new orders from Apple?
After Apple’s iPhone 4 announcement, Foxconn held their annual shareholders meeting in Taiwan and Hong Kong, and CEO Terry Gou has proclaim some interesting details on the suicide tragedy. He told the Taiwan press and shareholders, the company have evidence that some employee killed themselves is because of the financial payoff, thus Foxconn will end the suicide compensation. Guo was also frustrated that the media had created a bad social image on him…
Because of the terrible suicide tragedies that happened at China Foxconn, scuffles erupted in Taiwan biggest tech fair opening. Several Taiwan’s labor activists tried to enter into the exhibition center where Taiwan President was opening Asia’s biggest technology fair. The protesters, who were shouting “Capitalists kill people” and holding pictures of Foxconn CEO Terry Gou, and Steve Jobs of course, fought with police as they tried to deliver a letter to the Taiwan President. Slogan has written on Steve Jobs portraits, describe him as “the bloodsucker of OEM profit”, as for Foxconn CEO, Terry Gou is the “deadly ghost of overtime work”. Well, it seems that Steve Jobs’ social image is really badly affected by Foxconn. Hope that Apple has really found a solution to settle with Foxconn. [Taiwan News]
Since the autocratic Chinese government started to censor news on Foxconn, we are still able to find some interesting news to share around. From Taiwan CTiTV news report, we can see Foxconn workers comment on wage increase, CEO showing Olympic-sized swimming pools to the press, how is the company going to build safety web around dormitory buildings to avoid jumps, the care and counseling center, and the operating environment of the factory, all shown in videos, click in for the news video reports.
Some of the popular major websites (Link 1, Link 2, Link 3) have reported that the 14, 15 and even 16th jump have taken place. The source came from Twitter and several forums in China. In the meantime, there is no official words from any authorities regarding the issues. According to China Business News report, the Chinese government has sent in a special investigation team to handle the mess, so we guess censorship has been activated on the major news report in China. Foxconn’s CEO Gou Tai-ming had made another trip back to the plant, no public appearance yet, so web rumors are flying off.
At the meantime, more news report on the 13th suicide attempt. The incident was rumored as the 13th jump of Foxconn, and the company has already officially denied the rumor. The incident happened on May 27th early morning, there was an employee attempted to slit her wrists and survived after medical treatment. Today, Foxconn’s CEO officially meet a hundred or so media members at the Shenzhen factory. Here we have some photos for you to see what’s going on in there.
For the first time, 59yrs old Foxconn’s CEO, Gou Tai-ming, has finally respond on the suicide tragedy which had happened in Shenzhen, China. According to Taiwan’s media report, Gou told the press that Foxconn is not a ‘Sweatshop’, they are dealing with the case now and they will make every effort to stabilize the situation. One of Taiwan’s magazine report that Gou is inviting more monks to provide consolation for the suicide cases.
