“Chinese Pirate” Pleads Guilty to Steal US$100 Million Worth of Military Software

A Chinese dude pleaded guilty to selling pirated software—used by defense, space technology and engineering businesses—worth a retail value of over US$100 million. According to Reuters, these software was stolen from an estimated 200 American manufacturers, including Microsoft, Oracle, Agilent Technologies and Siemens, and sold onto 325 black market buyers in 61 countries between 2008 and 2011. Lenovo will be splitting its internal operations into two groups: Lenovo for mid- and low-range products, and Think for higher-end products currently associated with the ThinkPad. [UPDATE] China regulators have levied fines against Samsung, LG and several other Taiwanese companies accused of colluding to artificially inflate LCD panel prices. Six companies will share the 353 million yuan (abt USD$56.7 million) combined penalty, however Samsung and LG face the brunt of the punishment with respective fines. China’s authorities accuse the companies of holding some secret conferences since 2001, sharing confidential information and established price-fixing agreements. The accused companies reportedly admitted wrongdoing and have agreed to abide by Chinese law and uphold fair competition in the market. It seems to be quite difficult for manufactures to operate with full transparency nowadays, price-fixing scandal will certainly impact the panel sales.
