The working conditions at Foxconn’s factories has been a hot topic of discussion for a while now. On this Tuesday night, ABC News will broadcast a special Nightline episode filmed at Foxconn’s facilities in China, exploring the working conditions at the company’s factories. ABC has been given exclusive access to the factories and secured to the production lines on which iPads are made. Yeah yeah, Foxconn workers are getting a pay increase of up to 1,800 yuan ($286) per month and could be further raised above 2,200 yuan ($350) per month for those who pass a technical examination, Reuters reports. So that’s a pretty nice raise, right?

Ever since Foxconn CEO Terry Gou told people that the robots are coming, we think the Foxconn workers will go jobless someday. As Foxconn is going to boost the number of robots doing those repetitive tasks on its assembly line in 3 years time, the Foxconn chairman recently talked about the workforce of the company, saying that the management of one million workers gives him headaches.
On January 3, 2012, more than a hundred Foxconn employees stood on the factory building’s rooftop, threatening to commit suicide if their unemployment compensation are not paid. They were very frustrated.
UPDATE: Workers from this Foxconn plant manufacture Microsoft Xbox 360s. A Microsoft spokeperson made a statement on the situation at the plant:

According to the latest info from Taiwan’s analyst, Foxconn has arranged its iPad department to have only five days off during the upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year holiday, in order to meet the market demand of the iPad 3’s announcement in February. The Chinese new year will start on January 23, 2012, and Foxconn offers nine days off for the workers in other departments. The Taiwan-based company has also posted record revenues on strong sales of iPhones and iPads in November …
It’s normal to feel down after a relationship ends, but recently a 20-year old female worker at Foxconn’s Taiyuan (capital of Shanxi province) factory killed herself over disappointment in a relationship. Her suicide is not caused by stressful working conditions.
