In Chinese and other Asian societies, a red envelope or red packet is a monetary gift which is given during holidays or special occasions. Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi has been named in GQ magazine’s 100 sexiest women of the 21st century. She is the only Chinese name on the list. Zhang achieved fame in the West after leading roles in ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’, an ancient Kungfu films released in 2000, and also Jackie Chan’s film ‘Rush Hour 2′. Now the 34-years-old lady is named “This Year’s Hot Chinese Chick” by the US men’s magazines. Critics have slammed the lads’ glossy for suggesting Zhang Ziyi ‘is only attractive in the context of her own ethnicity’ after awarding titles for ‘Sexiest Chinese Chick’. Record-breaking Bond film Skyfall is due for release in China this week, but reports are surfacing that scenes have been censored and altered to make it acceptable to the Chinese authorities. One scene that has been been completely culled takes place in Shanghai, when a French hitman is shown shooting a Chinese security guard in the elevator lobby of a skyscraper before preparing for an assassination. In another scene, filmed in a casino in the Chinese territory of Macau, James Bond is talking to a hostess about whether her tattoo is the result of her being forced into prostitution at an early age. Although the lines remains intact on the soundtrack, the Chinese subtitles have been changed to suggest that 007 is asking her about her connections to the mob …

There are certain foods in China where not everyone dare to try. Rabbit head is one of them. This dish has no resemblance at all to the cute bunnies you are used to. Rabbit heads are skinned, cleaned and fried. They are very spicy, and supposedly delicious, if you can get over its appearance (they still look like rabbit heads …). According to those Chinese who like this dish, the best parts are the rabbits tongue and brains. Sounds disgusting, but if you visit cities in Sichuan provinces, you’ll see that they have an entire street lined with rabbit head restaurants, the dish is indeed enjoyed by many local people. One of the specialist has opened brunch in Beijing, the restaurant can sell 600 rabbit heads each day, each will cost 8 yuan (US$1.29), some customers can order 10 of these for a tasty nibble …
The 37-year-old American, Shannon Fagan, was a commercial photographer back in the US, but because of the economic downturn he decided to move his business to China. Rather than taking pictures, he said, he makes pictures – designing a photo to capture a specific attitude, activity or atmosphere in China. Clients can purchase them from his company’s library to help sell their products. Stock photography is a fairly unknown industry in China and American photographer runs much of his business on speculation of what the market needs. Bicycle is a symbol of China’s past. For most Chinese, the bike was once the only way of getting around. 4-wheel cars are the new status symbol in communist China. But for a growing number of wealthy Chinese, bikes are making a comeback. But these aren’t the ordinary working-class wheels. Rich Chinese are now buying bikes that cost the equivalent of three-year average salary in China. Demand for regular luxury goods like watches and premium cars reached a saturation point. Higher income groups now prefer the two-wheeled luxury to display their unique taste and healthy lifestyle. [UPDATE] TCL, the Chinese electronics and home appliance company, has announced a product placement deal to appear in the upcoming “Iron Man 3″ movie. Everything from Tony Stark’s motion panel device to his 110-inch 4K smart TV and mobile handsets will be from the Chinese company. Nowadays, elements of Chinese culture had been incorporated in Hollywood shootings and the plot lines, marking a collaboration between movie industries in the US and in China. TCL has just been committed to build an international brand image to deepen its brand influence. This isn’t the first brand placement for the company though. They’ve also done previous promotions with “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” and “The Avengers”. The superhero movie series “Iron Man 3” will be released on 3 May 2013. Sneak peaks of the Iron Man 3 filming in Beijing were reported last month.

Due to the deteriorating air quality in many major Chinese cities, notably Beijing, sales of masks and air purifiers have been picking up substantially. During the last few days, air pollution in Beijing hit level six, the most serious level on the scale. The public has become increasingly aware of the health hazards posed by the perpetual haze over China’s major cities. A major reason for the growing awareness of how bad the air is in China is the introduction of PM2.5 data, a recent move in response to public pressure. Sales of home air purifiers rose 14.7 percent in the first three quarters of 2012, compared with 11.4 percent growth during the same period in 2010. Last year, to mark the first anniversary of Steve Jobs’ death, Madame Tussauds had revealed a new wax figure of the legendary technology pioneer in Hong Kong. The Steve Jobs wax figure has given the public the opportunity to pay some tribute to a genius who has helped to shape the world with technology. We had visited the museum and we are deeply impressed by the craftsmanship. Now the wax figure has traveled on to China Shanghai for a second reveal. ‘Steve Jobs’ will be staying in Shanghai for three months, the next stop will be Thailand. Over this week, there were plenty of buzz from major medias like WSJ, DigiTime and Reuters about whether a cheaper iPhone is in the work or not. Coincidentally, Tim Cook and Apple Marketing SVP Phil Schiller were spotted in China meeting with a number of Chinese government officials, China’s three major mobile operators and interviewed by local journalists. In an official interview with Phil Schiller, he allegedly told the Shanghai Evening News that “Apple is not interested in making a cheap and low-profit iPhone”. However, this claim is now rejected after the publisher made “substantial changes” to the article.
