Mac OS X Running On MacBook Pro Knockoff ?

Macbook Pro Clone

We had talked about the Macbook Pro knockoff before, remember? The old glowing Dragonfly logo is finally upgraded to a glowing Apple logo. Based on the photos of the clone, it makes us think it runs Mac OS X, but is that true? Tell you later.

According to the specs list on Chinese online store, the machine comes with Windows 7, no words on Mac OS X. Therefore, we do not know if this machine is really capable to run Mac OS X.

Besides, the price of this machine is quite expensive in comparison to the other shanzhai netbooks. For 3100 yuan (about $466), it’s got a 14-inches 1376×768 LED backlit display in 16:9 ratio, powered by Intel Atom D510 1.66GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 320GB hard drive (5400rpm), based on Nvidia ION-2 platform in which you get dual graphics, Intel GMA 3150 and ION 2. That’s cool! No doubt it can handle 1080p video playback.

Good to see that the manufacturer has put an Apple logo on the machine. Definitely looks better!

The chiclet keyboard is nice, but with the Windows logo key, it feels weird. According to its specs list, the trackpad has multi-touch feature.

The entire machine with battery weighs 1.9 kg. It has 10 hours of standby juice.

hmm interesting. The atom processor is a drawback but the rest of this unit looks pretty nice.

As fr as I know, hacking OS X onto this processor is not possible.

What do you mean “not possible”? I was able to install Snow Leopard on my Aspire One with Intel Atom N270 CPU months back.

This is not the N270 processor. Not all Atom processors are created equal. In particular you must pay attention to the onboard graphics. For instance, the N450/460 series is not Hackintoshable (is that a word? hehe) because of the integrated GMA 3150 graphics. Again this is based on information from a couple months ago. Things have a way of changing quickly in this game.

Netbooks with Atom processors have been Hackintoshed for quite a while, and since this has the Nvidia Ion chipset, which has full QE/CI support, I wouldn’t be surprised if it is actual Mac OS X.

Looking at these photos, it makes me realize once again how fortunate I am to own a real Macbook Pro… (and 8 core Mac Pro, iPhone, iPad, AppleTV… I have them all LOL).

Even though these guys try to mimic Apple’s enclosure design, one look and you realize there are dozens of details and refinements that they had to leave out when compared to the real MacCoy.

On MacBook Pro, the vent is hidden, the trackpad button is hidden. The entire screen area is made of one beautiful piece of glass. LED indicator and and iChat camera status indicators are “cloaked” when not in use. The gap between the two halves is smaller….etc etc.

If it wasn’t for Apple, I think the entire computer industry would still be making poorly constructed beige box computers… Oh wait.. most of them still are.

Doesn’t matter if the pictures are. You can still install iAtkos (Hacked OS X) on it.

I too would like to know where I can buy one of these from.  I’d even be happy knowing where to buy one of the older, dragonfly-logo Q Pro models from.

But the N450/460 (correct me if I’m wrong) doesn’t have both the CPU and the GPU on the same die, so they can still be treated as separate processing units by the OS.
