
The leading European electronics retailer Media Markt had opened its first Asian store in China last week, thousands of people tried to squeeze into the store, terribly disordered. The store was compelled to close after opened for an hour and a half. Even more, customers can buy iPhone 4 at there but people have to line up for an appointment number, and some scalpers started using those appointment numbers to make some money out of iPhone 4 consumers. Why Shanghai’s Media Markt can attract that much people? Not only because they are selling iPhone 4, but also the company used low-cost way to promote its sales. The wave of people started at 6:30pm, adjacent traffic was completely paralyzed.

The store was planned to open at 7, however, the crowd arrived earlier than expected causing serious traffic paralysis, Media Markt decided to advance the time of opening to 6:40pm.

Just less than an hour after opened, the ground floor cash register area was full of people, each line has about 20 meter long.

According to the Media Markt staff, you need to get a reservation number by queuing up at Media Markt first. Then, one needs to queue up again with the reservation number to get a ticket for purchasing the iPhone 4 at Media Markt. The entire process took approximately 16-17 hours…
Same things are happening here, just like the iPhone 4 scalpers at Beijing, some people are selling reservation numbers for around $400 – $700 RMB, which implies consumers won’t have to line up for 11 hours.
