Shanghai Citizens Think Is Reasonable To Monitor Their Neighbours

A survey from Shanghai Morning Post showed 59 percent of people think “it’s reasonable to install private surveillance cameras to monitor public areas around their apartments to ensure safety, even though it may bother their neighbours.” Similar to the commercial “Big Brother”, isn’t it? Does that implies Shanghai is not secured for living now?

Of course not, considering that Shanghai has relatively low crime rate. The reason for the poll is began with a local incident when a man installed four cameras outside his door, in a public area, so that he could record who was going in and out of his apartment. Strange Guy?

A local lawyer Liu Chunquan said the current law doesn’t ban residents to install cameras by themselves, but “in the name of public harmony, people should ask neighbors for permission installing the cameras in public spaces.” However, that doesn’t mean that resident is illegal, because as long as that person doesn’t make the video public, “residents who use cameras to monitor their own property at public areas would not be violating other people’s rights of privacy.”
