China to Finally Sell iPhone 4 and iPad Officially

Banner shows up at retail store of China Unicom, saying, “The forth generation of iPhone has arrived.”

Right now, Apple has not placed the iPhone 4 and iPad on store shelves in China. Today, we have some good news. The pricing plans for iPhone 4 have leaked, and China Unicom has sent their deputy general manager to California to talk with Apple about the launch of iPhone 4 and iPad in China. What’s more, China Unicom will start selling Wi-Fi equipped iPhones from this Monday.

China Unicom is the first Chinese mobile carrier offering iPhones in the country. When China Unicom started selling the iPhone in China last year, they weren’t able to include Wi-Fi support due to issues with the Chinese government trying to introduce a competing product called WAPI… And now, the Wi-Fi support is finally approved on the 8GB models of iPhone 3GS.

For the iPhone 4 and iPad, it’s really coming soon to China this time. The general sales manager and the deputy general manager of China Unicom have traveled to the US to talk with Apple about the launch of the latest iProducts. It looks like Apple has finally made the deal with China Unicom, and both parties are in the final stage of discussion. Since the iPhone 4 has got approved for the network license in China, China Unicom is expecting to launch the iPhone 4 by September, together with the iPad. Here are the unconfirmed contract-free prices of the iPhone 4 and iPad from China Unicom:

  • iPhone 4 16GB: $5880 RMB (about $868 USD)
  • iPhone 4 32GB: $6999 RMB (about $1033 USD)
  • iPad Wi-Fi 16GB: $3999 RMB (about $590 USD)
  • Of course, customers can choose to sign a 2-year contract to purchase the iPhone 4 with monthly plan. You can check out the leak pricing plans by clicking here.

According to Sina, the iPhone 4 provided by China Unicom will not include YouTube and the feature of sharing photos through MobileMe. It’s confirmed to include Wi-Fi support, and FaceTime. Customers who have purchased the iPhone 3GS from China Unicom could get a trade-in offer to buy the iPhone 4 with a cheaper price, $4880 RMB (about $720 USD) for 16GB and $5999 RMB (about $885 USD) for 32GB. However, this requires customers to extend their existing iPhone plans for another one year.

Since the iPhone 4 will soon to be launched in China, the gray markets in the country are decreasing the price tags of those iPhone 4s which are imported from the US. Anyway, we believe the Chinese Apple fanboys are looking forward to the iPhone 4 launch day at China, maybe August 30 or September 1.
