iPhone 4 Arriving in Hong Kong Gray Market

The iPhone 4 will go on sale June 24 in the United States and four other countries including Japan. For Hong Kong, the device will be available in early-July at the gray market. According to one of the shop owners in Hong Kong, about 50-100 of iPhone 4 will be in stock and they start from $7000 HKD (about $900). Also, the price of 3GS will not be reduced in the gray market, NOT AT ALL.

Instead of waiting for the official launch date of iPhone 4 in HK, the locals can move on to the gray market to get one. For the 16GB model, it will be priced at $7000-8000 HKD (about $900-1025 USD), and for the 32GB model, it will come in at $8000-9000 HKD (about $1025-1150 USD). The price is totally insane but the Apple fanboys and the iPhone accessories manufacturers from China will buy it with no second thoughts.

Surprisingly, the iPhone 3GS will maintain at the same price as before in the gray market. The sellers have no intentions of dropping the price down.

While the gray market is well-prepared for the iPhone 4, the 3HK carrier who’s providing iPhones has officially announced the launching of iPhone 4. Below is an email from the PR department of 3HK to a Chinese tech blog, Unwire.

At the same time, the Hong Kong Apple store has officially dropped the price of the 3GS. For the 16GB model, it now costs for HK$ 4,488 while the 32GB comes in at HK$ 4,988. It’s almost a 20% discount from the original price (16GB：$5,388；32GB：$6,288).

    Where is the “grey market” in HK anyway? That guy in the pic, selling the ipads, is he in Mong Kong, Wan Chai Computer center? Some place in SSP?

    I'm curious as I'll likely take at look at the iphone 4S when it gets here. If he's selling factory unlocked models (not sure how he would get those early), then I'll buy one. If they need to be jail broke and unlocked, then I'll wait until the factory unlockeds arrive.

    I saw a similar store in Kowloon, near Tsin Tsa Tsui Station… and the Gray market is in Chung Kin Mansion (I hope I spelled it right)… Did not get to see much as I was only a tourist !

    Sham Shui Po is the main computer area for non-tourists.
    Wancha is the main one for foreigners.

    Prices will be cheaper at Sham shui po (marginally), but its bit further out on the subway.
    Personally I prefer Sham Shui Po, but I know what I'm looking for, your average tourist is better off at Wanchai.

    Do NOT buy anything in TST (Tsim Tsa Tsui), as most of the sellers there are tourist scammers. It has gotten better, but you still hear of people getting ripped off, so avoid unless desperate.

    Oh, also – you can buy iPhone 4G on the mainland also, although pricing is even steeper than HK.

    Our suppliers right now are short on stock – what comes in is either presold, or sells within a few hours, so prices are sky high. Local Shanghai pricing for 4G is in the 10k range for an English 16G, or 8-9k for US 16G. Add 1000-1500 more for 32G.

    Prices should drop radically once the HK model comes out, as most of the people source via HK.
    Expected HK pricing is same as before – 5-6000RMB (equiv to HK pricing really).

    Saw an iPhone 4 yesterday in the Wan Chai Computer market for $18,800 Hong Kong. Had to laugh–very hard–at that one. Rumors of Mong Kok Computer Center having it for about $12,000.

    iPads are still between $6,000-$8,000, but I would expect the price to drop quickly this week as the rumored Apple Hong Kong iPad release is July 16th or so…iPhone 4 rumors are around July 28. But like all rumors, they're just that–rumors…
