The Real Truth Behind Foxconn’s Suicide Cluster

Foxconn Workers

UPDATED

The Foxconn suicide mess is all started from job stress. Within half a year, there are 9 suicides with 7 confirmed-deaths in Foxconn’s factory of China, Shenzhen. In order to find out what’s really going on in that factory, the Southern Weekly, described by The New York Times as China’s most influential liberal newspaper, has sent an amateur reporter to slip into Foxconn’s factory to pretend as a worker and the mission is to find out the truth of the suicide cluster.

The deaths of the workers in Foxconn have caused a lot of noise in the IT world. The Macs, iPods, iPhones and iPads are all assembled in Foxconn’s factory of China. And now, without any explains, workers who are assembling these gadgets have gone crazy and some of them killed themselves. After the sixth suicide attempt happened in April, Southern Weekly’s amateur reporter, Liu Zhi Yi, has been arranged to slip into Foxconn’s factory and surprisingly, he faced the workers with well communication while another senior reporter, Yang Ji Bin, has made interviews with the senior management guys. Both of them have found out the real living conditions of Foxconn workers.

*Please take note that the stuff you are going to read below is not a straight translation or human translation. We are just republishing the original Chinese article from Southern Weekly in English with important highlights for you.*

According to Southern Weekly, everything we wanted to know about “life inside the factory” is finally been uncovered by their amateur reporter who disguised as a Foxconn worker. This reporter is a graduate student and his age is perfectly okay to be a worker of Foxconn since the factory only hires teenagers aged 20 or so. He was employed without any problems and in this 28 days of undercover work, he clearly understood what the workers died for and knew how they live. Also, he’s shocked in different ways. He found out that every single one of the workers is living through a life like a clock. They work, they off, they go to sleep. And the next day, they repeat the same thing again. The reporter thinks that the only way to stop this repeating life is that they end their precious life someday.

If you are wondering if they are happy for producing Apple products, the answer is No. They are only happy on the 10th of every month, that’s the day when they get their salaries. On the 10th, the ATM machines are fully crowded with workers and their salaries start from $900 Chinese Yuan (about $130). There’s one special agreement workers could choose to sign for before starting to work. The workers could sign a self-willing overtime working agreement so the factory is not responsible for their long hours of working. Anyway, they still have public holidays just like anyone.

Next, revolutionary and magical gadgets including iPhone and iPad are assembled by these workers and almost all kinds of gadgets in the market comes from them. Most of the workers have no comments about the popular Apple products and they never dream to own the gadgets since their salaries are only enough to buy a knockoff version. While the gadget nerds are discussing about how to spend their money on Apple’s iProducts, these workers are discussing about how to spend their money on those cheap knockoff iPhones.

The undercover reporter also had some chats with the workers during meal time. Some of them told him that they admired those workers who got sick leave approvals to take that chance to get some rest. They also discussed about their jobs to know more about the dangers and harmful stuff that may affect their health. When they talked about the suicide cluster in the factory, they are speechless and some of them even made some jokes of those suicide attempts.

There are some interesting stuff happening in the factory too. For the warehouse trolleys which are required to put tons of goods on it, the workers call these trolleys as their “BMWs”. While they are pulling their so-called BMWs, they have the motivation to get the job done in order to get a real BMW in the future. Also, there are some internet cafes hiding in some restaurants outside the factory which provide online porn videos for these miserable young men who fails to find a lover in the working environment. Some of them complaint that the videos are not enjoyable to watch for a long period of time. It’s better to find a girlfriend instead. Other than that, the female workers will get frustrated when products could not pass through the quality control. They will use “metal stick” to knock the pin machines to release their frustration. Somehow, the machine will run smooth after the frustration knock.

Foxconn Tickets
Lottery tickets littered by workers. (Photo: Southern Weekly)

Moreover, the workers always dream for being rich someday. To fulfill this dream, they would make use part of their salaries to buy lottery tickets. They also put their hopes on horse-racing gambling too. You may wonder, since there are still hopes in their life, why they would still kill themselves? Well, colleague-friendship is a big problem in the factory. There are some workers who do not know the names of their roommates even though they have worked together for a long time. According to the editor of Southern Weekly, it seems like the workers do not treat each other as friends because they are always wearing the same working uniform and doing the same work everyday. This makes one to be looking at his own “mirror reflection”. They have no interesting topics to chat about so they don’t tend to become friends while working together. Thus, if a worker has difficulties or working pressure, he can’t share his feelings or seek someone for help to solve his problems.

What’s more, the workers are superstitious in some ways. Previously, there are some accidents happened like a worker having his finger cut-off during the production of devices. Now, few workers in the factory think that the machines are cursed so it’s dangerous for them to use the machines for their jobs. One of the workers said that he always wish to drop some stuff on the floor so he can bend down to pick it up while working. Due to the long hours of standing (up to 8 hours), if he has the chance to lie or squat down on the floor, it would be the most enjoyable moment during the working period. So, he could get the chance to rest.

My Conclusion:

With over 400,000 of workers in the Foxconn factory of China, it will be a mess if workers are mistreated badly. It’s definitely a pity for them to carry out mass production of iProducts while not being able to afford one. Some of them even killed themselves for the working pressure and I wish Foxconn could produce a better working environment like providing shopping malls, cinemas or karaoke to entertain them. Destress rooms are probably not enough to fix their mental stress and I’m afraid it’s a silly idea since it may lead the stressed worker to kill someone else. Also, Foxconn needs to give more human rights to their workers and give more concerns on them. One thing they must take note is that please don’t treat the workers like dogs. If Foxconn does not solve the problem, there will be more suicides to happen. The workers definitely need beer, romance and slightly higher pays. To say it simple, just make them happy. Let’s hope we don’t see a 10th jump… [Southern Weekly]

    What suicide cluster? 7 suicides out of almost half a million workers while sad is actually far below the suicide rates of most countries including the USA and a third the rate of the rest of China.

    Shouldn't Foxconn be applauded for having the impressively low suicide rate of only 4.5 per 100,000?

    Here's a list of the suicide rates per 100,000 in a few other counties for comparison:

    UK = 6.4
    Australia = 10.9
    USA= 11.2
    Canada = 11.6
    Rest of China = 13.9
    France = 17.0
    Japan = 24.4
    Finland = 18.4
    Russia = 27.1
    Belarus = 35.1

    In other words, by basing this story on the suicide rate amongst the 400,000 workers at Foxconn's plants, this article comes across as one of the worst examples of a sensationalist media beatup that I've seen in a long while.

    That is the real story here.

    If you are guilty for buying apple products manufactured in China, just feel guilty for 99% rest of anything you buy from99% of world's brands

  • heee

    But who is more likely to suicide, someone who is at least well paid and have some choices on what to do with their time after 8pm or someone who the best thing he can do is to take something that has fallen into the floor? Your numbers (in case they're true — you didn't cite the sources — and comparable — aren't those numbers yearly rate? we're not even in the middle of the year) just show that chinese are resistent people and can live in hardest conditions than us in occident (or you're saying that the conditions in work conditions foxconn are better than edf in france or in france in general?).

  • aiz

    to mrrtmrrt,,,the suicide figures tht you have given are based on nations not on individual firms, so you cant compare it in such a brief manner. secondly, the interval between suicides must be taken into account. as i understand these suicides all occured in a fairly quick succession. furthermore, where exactly did you get these figures… without clear justification and referencing it is possible that you are a foxconn pr rep or something like that trying to make the matter seem not at all important.

  • Barry

    I'm as empathetic as anyone to the plight of impoverished and abused workers in tyrannical societies, but what are we (the benefactors) supposed to do in response to this comment? Throw away our blood-stained possessions and refuse to buy anything from our most favored trading partner? Then these poor workers will go from having bad jobs to having no jobs.

  • George

    is this progress!i don't think so!!I believe that 'they' drive us from that way ,so they can make us working under pressure without human and industrial rights without thoughts and feelings

  • jacko

    It's the transition time for change within Chinese firms or pretty soon will bust. Bear in mind workers are the real asset for the company, if you abuse them, eventually will revolt. At the end will cost the company even more. South Korea demonstrated us the best example back in 90's.

  • mrrtmrrt

    @heee
    This article revolves completely around the allegedly high Foxconn suicide rate being proof that something is rotten in the state of Foxconn. As such it is important to find out if the rate is actually high or not.

    @aiz
    Fair point. I based my calculations on the statement that there have been 7 confirmed suicide deaths since the start of the year. If the deaths are not evenly spread over that time and in fact are accelerating, it does make extrapolations more difficult, so we won't be able to make completely accurate comparisons till the end of the year. I did however want to point out that so far, statistically this rate is not excessive compared to the rest of the world.

    Also, I would have thought assembly line workers might be expected to have a higher suicide rate than the general population in any country, so I think it is highly appropriate to compare a company's employees against national averages particularly considering the worker demographic would have had a higher rate than the general population, being smack bang in the middle of the highest risk age groups.

    Please realise that I definitely have severe concerns about human rights abuses in China, the tragedy of Tiananmen Square and the amount of religious persecution that goes on in China etc. However, I want to make my judgements based on facts, not emotions, and with the most important fact in this article looking like it is incorrect, I have to point that out.

    Suicide rate figures are from Wikipedia, but I can't seem to post the URL, so just search for “suicide rate”

    Here are my calculations to work out Foxconn's rate:

    7 suicides out of 400,000 workers = 1.75 per 100,000
    since start of 2010 = approx 140 days
    Thus we arrive at the equivalent of approx 4.5 suicides per 100,000 people per year

    My hope would be that with all this scrutiny, Foxconn is motivated to be as fair as possible to it's workforce. However, I do not like people or companies unfairly accused of falsehoods.

    I work in the US running CNC waterjet systems. I end up standing 8+ hours a day and lifting thousands of pounds of finished parts off of the tables in a day. It's not that bad once you get used to it, I'm rarely even sore from it after 2 years of doing it.

    There's also another reason behind these suicides these chinese companies would often hold their employess by the leg with bonds or what we refer to as service agreements for 2-3 years.
    They would require to sign such contracts before they undergo training usually.Signing such contracts is no different from signing your SOUL.
    The company has full rights over you should you voluntarily quit or get sacked.

    Should they get terminated or fired, the employee has to refund the company the remaining months of salary till their contract tenure ends. So these evil companies would often threaten their employees should they leak out company information or any conflict takes place. Getting fired is just part of life but having to be extorted a sum of 1 or more years of wage is let alone losing your income?

    How would one work if he doesn't get along with his superiors or bosses around any more?Even if he did not, let's say if his superior wanted to get rid of him?

    Some mentioned revolting.Not in China where there's almost no human rights.The Communist Government favors investors more than anything else.

    Don't buy any FOXCONN products, Slave factory. Slave Master China and Taiwan

  • john649

    if your REALLY empathetic you can make a commitment to purchase only Fair trade goods that ensure workers are treated fairly and paid fair wages otherwise your empathy becomes a faux excuse to continue pretending you care while pillaging for the riches and I seriously doubt you can even comprehend what blood stained possessions really means nor are you truly concerned that these 'poor' ppl will have jobs if you don't buy your toys.

  • buzz

    Standing up for 8 hours…..How terrible !

  • FoxConJob

    8 hours and already tired.

    That's just half of the story. How about 15 hours straight at work everyday for 6 days a week or even 7 days non-stop?This excludes 15-30mins break for breakfast & lunch?
    That article above is just about 90% true.

    There are technicians who work non stop without rest days just to earn an extra income so that they could afford a home and a car.

  • Barry

    Far trade products are not available in my area. Now what do I do? I await your helpful response so that I can align my moral standards with yours.

    And why put “poor” in scare quotes? You don't think they are?

  • victor

    The suicides probably were induced by one of chemical in the electronic circuitry that impairs a normal production of serotonin subsequently lower level of serotonin in the blood stream can provoke depression and consequently suicide.

  • Kev

    Good conclusion it is well known that the chemicals used to manufacture these electronic componants are known carcinogens and serotonin depressants hence the high rates of depression and suivide.

  • Ray

    The suicide rate in China is 13.9 per 100,000 people. Foxconn has 400,000 employees. People should do the math

  • Ray

    One of the prices of the Chinese “economic miracle” has been their environment! The affects are not just felt in China, but throughout the world, including countries selling their forests and minerals to feed the factories. However, consumers need to take responsibility too. How can the earth continue to support our wasteful affluent lifestyle? If the US didn't guzzle so much gas there'd be no need to be drilling mile-deep wells off-shore (and fight wars for oil, etc.) Hmmm, now I've opened a can of worms!

  • ChinaOx

    I live & work in China – but spent the first 35 years of my life in the UK.
    China is a lovely place, with beautiful and friendly people. There is a really good society and caring community that is missing from the Western world/cultures. There are occasional bad things happen, as there are everywhere in the world, but on the whole this is a great place. It does sound terrible, when you think of someone working for $150 per month – but they are given food, housing & medical care. Many of the operator worker come from the small countryside villages, where $150 is a massive amount of money. Many work for 3-5 years, go home and retire or buy a house, for cash and then start a business/continue the family trade.
    I think you shouldn't believe all the crap you hear in the media – especially the US media, most of the people are happy & smiley & enjoy life – it is just a different life to what we are used to. Some of the reports are true, but they are written or reported from one angle – to try and play down what China does and big up how evil this country may be. They are never going to allow anything complimentary to be said about China.
    Tiananmen Square – I know it was bad, but I sort of agree also. They were making a point, they were told to move or be crushed, they got crushed. The government did what they said they would – where else in the world does that happen – not in UK or US for sure.
    Tibet – they disagree with the laws that the other 1.5 billion people follow – you can't keep everybody happy, so they rule as to what is best for the majority – again different to the west, where the rules are what is best for the rich.
    None of this trouble is a China thing. It is possibly a company thing, Foxconn has a reputation for being very regimental, treating its staff not so great & the rumours that they were not all suicides have some very compelling evidence to go with them. People can't afford to buy the real thing – this is true, but whatever they do buy they really look after – China does not suffer from the terrible throw away society that is the west. If the pay was at a level that you expect, to be reasonable, you wouldn't be able to afford to buy these products either.
    You can do all the talking on you high horse saying we shouldn't buy this and isn't this terrible – but you're still wearing the clothes & shoes that are made in worse factories with lower conditions & higher pollution, still buying the electronics, CDs, DVDs, medical products – almost all of the consumer products you buy come from here. You want to show the world how great and caring you are and how you are the only one who knows or cares about such things – stop buying everything and go live in a self-sufficient self-righteous commune.

    All these comments argue the same point, harsh working conditions. But video and pictures shot inside the Foxconn city-factory show those conditions. There is something everyone has not noticed Workers are positioned too close together on the assembly lines. That design requires Cubicle Level Protection. A report from Foxconn has pictures showing they use cubicles in offices but failed to recognize the need for the same protection on assembly lines.

    Not feeling guilty about buying Apple; these people, who clearly have an awful situation, are not prisoners or slaves. They can walk away and they should strike. That’s what it took in the US to change things a century ago when young girls from the country side, as well as boys as young as 6 or 7 worked in the mills. It took alot of pain, determination and violence to end the corporate exploitation of workers. It’s going to be tough and our government, not our corporations, should set up rules for goods imported into the US. It’s THE only way. But, vote for Republicans and this will go on forever.

    • I_pick_fights_wth_stupd_people

      I agree and disagree with you. If they want change then yes you’d have to have determination and violence, etc. Yet, these people are from poor countryside they are used to not having enough food and there are literally thousands if not tens of thousands more like them. You think if they protest they wouldn’t just get fired and replaced? It’s easy to talk about the U.S making these changes before your time when you had no real part in it (assuming you weren’t alive before the T-shirt factory incident). I’m not saying you’re wrong to think that it is what must be done, but you act like it’s so easy to just walk away too.
