TCL in association with Tencent, have jointly launched the ‘iCE SCREEN’ product, a “large screen mobile entertainment smart cloud device” featuring a 26-inch screen with 1366×768 resolution. The Android-powered display comes with a dual-core Cortex A9 1GHz processor, a Mali 400 GPU, 4GB of RAM, Wi-Fi built-in and support for a memory card of up to 32GB in size. It doesn’t come with the latest ICS or Jelly Bean OS, an IR remote can be used to control the system, and the device can sit horizontally or vertically in its stand. Both companies expect this new type of smart TV to be used as a large portable screen and communications device …
As TCL’s content provider partner, Tencent brings to the iCE SCREEN an array of QQ services and applications. iCE SCREEN’s independent operating system enables internet connectivity, offering users audio visual, music, photo album, games, communications and many other major smart cloud applications. The app store is provided by TCL, and there is no Google service built-in, in future it can be upgrade to Android 4.0 system. The mobile android display will be available in China for 1,999 yuan (US$315) in September.

There is no internal battery nor touch screen display for the ‘iCE SCREEN’ device, so practically it’s not a giant tablet, and there is no TV tuner build-in too, so don’t consider this as a Smart TV. The display weights about 4 KG (8.8 pound) which probably means it’s mainly to get ‘mobile’ within the house, especially since you have to bring the power supply with you. ‘iCE SCREEN’ might be a new form of consumer electronics product, but from the design and usage perspective, it doesn’t have too much market potential. But it is interesting to see Tencent company, the internet giant in China, is crossing into the hardware territory.
