More than 10,000 suspects have been arrested and 600 criminal gangs “busted” in China’s latest cybercrime crackdown. The crackdown targeted pornography and the illegal sale of personal details. Beijing’s police force said the crack down on internet-related crimes are as a part of its efforts to “protect the physical and mental health of young people” using the web. The authorities have busted a major domestic porn site with over a million members, where some of its operators were underage …
Police are reportedly especially concerned about the number of minors accessing the porn site regularly. The Beijing police set up a special unit to investigate for half a year, and they have found out the site was hosted in the United States, and it had been in operation since 2009. Its operators and viewers were both primarily domestic. Most of the viewers were young student, and they were in the disseminator role. It also changed URLs frequently to avoid police detection. The message board had accrued over 8 million posts, and police ultimately downloaded more than 1 TB of pornographic material from there. The affiliate marketing has also profited the site for more than 15 million yuan (US$2.4 million).

Until now, all pornographic content has been blocked by the censors inside of China. Since the People’s Republic of China was founded in 1949, anyone who produces, distributes or purchases lewd magazines, books or video is breaking the law. But the internet has really fuelled the sexual revolution in China. With more than 500 million internet users and sex education in its infancy, young Chinese people turn to the internet for everything from information about sex to pornography. Chinese authorities need to have a better development on school’s sexual education in order to build up positive sexual knowledge for the Chinese youngster.
