In the wake of the newly release “Macbook pro with Retina display“, a Chinese software company Qihoo 360 quietly disclosed they are making a new budget phone that would sport a 4.5-inch Retina display. The news came from the official weibo of Qihoo 360 chairman Zhou HongYi. He posted a photo of this new smartphone and he named it like the assault rifle as “AK 47″. A specs sheet was also revealed in the meanwhile. Check out more info after the break.
Before we go on with the Qihoo AK 47 smartphone, let me remind you that Qihoo 360 is now aiming to expand its business to the smartphone sector, therefore they have been looking for ways to release their own handsets. The “Huawei Shine” that Qihoo jointly released with Huawei last month was their initial step into the smartphone market. Lately, the company has confirmed that the Huawei Shine was expected to start pre-ordering in July and distribute in August.
Ok. Back to what we suppose to focus on. The above image is what Zhou posted on his Weibo, but we don’t think it refers to what the Qihoo AK47 is going to look at since the image above looks like Google Nexus.
Specs wise, Qihoo AK47 will sport a 4.5-inch Retina display with 1280×720 resolution (326ppi), which is what the iPhone, iPad and the next generation Macbook Pro are using. Apart from that, it will run a dual-core TI OMAP 4460, which is the same processor that Google Nexus is currently using. This dual-core SoC is clocked at 1.2GHz, and uses ARM Cortex-A9 architecture, just like the Exynos. The OMAP4 platform will make use of an additional hardware accelerator called IVA 3 that makes encoding and decoding HD video a snap. So if the Qihoo AK47 will come with a HD display, so this hardware focus on video is a big plus.
Furthermore, the device is equipped with 1GB of RAM and 4GB of onboard storage. We are not sure whether it has a microSD slot for internal memory expansion. There will be a 2.0 megapixel front facing camera and a 5.0 mp rear camera. Of course, it is running the latest Google’s Android OS, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Lastly, the specs sheet also revealed it will come with a 1,800 mAh battery, which could give around 5-7 hours of endurance. Zhou also disclosed the machine will have a slim profile, which measures at 9.5mm thick; he also claimed the AK47 will be available sometimes this month, the company is offering this machine at 1,699 RMB ($274).
So far, that’s all we know. Everything seems positive and impressive. When the device his the market, Retina display will no longer exclusive for Apple products anymore. If you have any other questions or options about this smartphone, feel free to leave us a comment. In the meanwhile, we will keep you update.
