James Cameron Believes Chinese Moviegoers Want to Touch 3D Boobs, not 3D Iceberg

Chinese moviegoers hoping to catch the re-release of Titanic in 3D won’t get to see Kate Winslet’s boobs. Many Chinese were dismayed to find that the release of Titanic 3D in China is not quite the film they remembered. During the peak romantic moment when Kate Winslet as Rose poses nude for Leonardo DiCaprio to sketch her, Winslet is now cropped from the neck up. In 1997, the scene was completely uncut and displayed on a wide screen in China, which was deeply registered in the memory of Chinese. Naturally, Chinese viewers are now upset and they were complaining about the censoring. Some even lampooned the authorities with a fake news story, which has fooled many major media outlets, including James Cameron himself …

In response to the censorship, one satirical website made up a quote that claimed to have received words from China’s Administration of Radio, Film, and Television, saying that they are worried Chinese viewers may reach out their hands for a touch and thus interrupt other people’s viewing. Tons of English-language news outlets are running with this words even though it’s obviously not real. The rumor was originated with a blog post at SINA weibo, which fails to mention the joke aspect. In the end, even James Cameron also believe the fake quote when he was given an interview during a talk show (Link here: @16:30 min). The Chinese state news agency Xinhua later reports that “there is no official response to the roll-back of the censorship policy concerning the 3D film.”

However, while the statements may be a fabrication, the decision to cut the scene is real. Chinese who paid to experience Kate Winslet’s breastesses in eye-popping 3D are none too pleased. Despite Government regulators edit out the nude scenes, the 3D re-release of Titanic had a huge opening day in China this week. The film reportedly took in 73 million yuan (US$11.6 million) from 2,400 3D screens and 66 IMAX 3D screens throughout the country. That’s bigger than Titanic 3D’s weekend debut in any other international market. So if the Chinese moviegoers still want to see 3D boobs, and not 3D iceberg, they can pay a visit to Hong Kong for the upcoming 4D vibrating porn movie.
