Imagine if your mother doesn’t like you playing online game, and chasing you with a kitchen knife, how scary would that be? This actually happened to this Internet-obsessed 11 year old Chinese boy, her mother slashed his son’s leg with a kitchen knife after she felt upset that his son had seriously addicted to web-gaming and saw him regularly steal money from her.
The boy has an alias called Dongdong, who lives with his parents in central Chinese province Hubei, discovered the joys of internet gaming a few months ago after playing online games at a local ‘black’ Internet bar. Since China’s current laws require all internet bar users to register with an ID card and have their picture taken, the use of ‘black’ bar appears more common particularly amongst children, which could help kids to overcame ID requirements that restrict Internet and gaming activity. Therefore, black internet bars have sprung up to fill the demand, and have profited massively from children like Dongdong.
Over time, he would routinely steal money from his parents in small amounts to fuel his addiction or “lose the change” when his parents sent him to the store to buy groceries.
The night of the incident, the boy pocketed his mother’s money again and left his parents after dinner. Subsequently, Dongdong was found by his parents playing away at a Internet cafe and he got beated up with a laundry rack, and when Dongdong remained defiant, his mother grabbed a kitchen knife and slashed his leg.
Her husband did feel the pain in his heart, but he didn’t blame on his wife since he thought she was just trying to get his son back on the right track. Dongdong also felt sorry for her mother, and he promised won’t do that again. Corporal punishment is still very common in China, and is encouraged as an effective method of temperance (so long as it’s parents, and not a teacher). But this case demonstrates the issue of black Internet bars in China is significant.
