It’s normal to feel down after a relationship ends, but recently a 20-year old female worker at Foxconn’s Taiyuan (capital of Shanxi province) factory killed herself over disappointment in a relationship. Her suicide is not caused by stressful working conditions.
The tragic incident took place in Foxconn’s new factory in Shanxi provincial capital Taiyuan on Wednesday, police told the Xinhua News Agency. The victim, Li Rongying, jumped off the forth floor of a building, and she was not saved by any safety nets. Police said the woman left a note saying she was upset over the recent end of a romantic relationship. Li’s relatives have asked for an autopsy.
We’ve seen a lot of Foxconn suicides in the past, but this latest one is not caused by the factory’s touch working conditions. As far as we know, Foxconn currently employs 1.2 million people, and owns several mega-factories in China that produce components and finished products for the world’s largest electronics companies, including Apple. We think it’s pretty difficult for the company to take care every single one of workers. Perhaps the only thing left to do to stop the suicides is to install more safety nets and bring in more Buddhist monks to try and rid the factories of “evil spirits.”
