The Godfather of the Chinese Internet industry, Jack Ma was at AsiaD event this morning which held in Hong Kong right now. He once again publicly announced his interest in buying the troubled Internet giant — Yahoo. Ma said that they’re just waiting for the Yahoo board to tell them what they want to do, Yahoo have to respond. And what Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang said on the previous day, his company’s board continues its strategic review process, but that there are a number of options beyond just selling the company. Jack Ma and his Alibaba Group cover an awful lot of ground in China, from e-commerce to recent excursions in search and beyond. Here are the important highlight that Ma has talked about during the event.
“Without Yahoo, I wouldn’t have started my Internet business,” says Ma, adding that he will like to help Yahoo. Ma says he will bring in new management if he was in charge.
Ma says he is definitely interested to have business relationship between Alibaba and Twitter or Square. The company is always looking for strong partners.
Talking about China’s copy culture, Ma doesn’t really agree that Chinese tech companies copy the ideas of others. He said the point is to make your customers happy in whatever way you can, if that means following in someone else’s footsteps, so be it.
Respond on the recent prices raised for its merchants, which caused some outcry, Ma said: “Sometimes the people that love you most are the people that hurt you most”.
The host asked him will censorship stifle entrepreneurship in China, Ma respond: “I think censorship is an issue, but it’s not that big of an issue … I think the Chinese government is getting more and more open.” Jack Ma is very careful on commenting the issue of China’s censorship !
