U.S. and Chinese Internet Companies Comparison Video

The Chinese internet censors have provided unprecedented opportunities for Chinese Internet companies to develop a social media for the largest population in the world with over 1 billion people. U.S. sites like Facebook and Twitter are not allowed to step into China’s Internet world, and this means almost 400 million Chinese internet users could not access Facebook and Twitter. So the social media in China is dominated by Chinese Internet companies, and here’s a video explaining the Chinese version of Facebook, Twitter, Google and Amazon.

About Sina

Perhaps the Chinese Internet company we love most is Sina. The company’s microblogging platform, Sina Weibo, is actually inspired by Twitter and Facebook. It has all the features of Twitter, and some features of Facebook. It is a phenomenom that deserves our attention, and that even Twitter could learn a lot from. Please don’t think Weibo is a ripoff, it is in fact faster, stronger and more functional than Twitter. With more registered accounts and users than Twitter, it has dominated the social media world in China.

About Baidu

Next, Baidu. Here’s one fact you must know. China has the largest Internet population in the world at 420 million and 99 percent of them use Baidu’s search engine. And according to the latest report from China research firm Analysys International, Baidu’s search market share is rising up from 73 percent to 75.5 percent between Q3 to Q4 in 2010 — eating into rival Google’s market share, which fell from 21.6 percent to 19.6 percent in the same period. So, Baidu clearly dominates the China search market. But does it have ambitions to grow outside the country? Well, Baidu CEO Robin Li said America isn’t a high priority market for Baidu although he wanted the U.S. to pay attention to China. He hinted they would add different languages for the search engine in the future. We believe Baidu is seeking to expand in Asia, but we think it will not go head to head with Google on its home turf in the U.S.

About Tencent

As for Tencent, it is the world’s third largest Internet firm. It is also China’s leading instant messaging provider. The company’s instant messaging service platform, QQ, is very, very popular in the country and 99 percent of Chinese internet users are using it. You may not know, QQ can be used both International and Local for three major features: Instant messaging, file transfer and video conferencing. Here’s the fact, Tencent’s QQ instant messaging is as prevalent as Google and Facebook in the U.S. Out of any 10 friends you have in China, 9 definitely use QQ.
