BYD, the well-known Chinese manufacturer for automobiles and rechargeable batteries, and not forget the most famous for Warren Buffet’s investment in it, is planning to enter the crowded smartphone market. A senior executive at BYD has posted some info and pictures to his microblog account, hinting the company will soon release a self-developed Android smartphone which cost less than 1000 yuan (US$157), which come with a 4 inch screen and huge capacity battery …
.
The posted news did not specify the actual specification of the phone, only to describe in numbers to let everyone guess what the new smartphone is going to be.
“The product of BYD UMTS, bigger than 4, thinner than 11, bigger than 1500, higher than 2.3, and most important of all, smaller than 1000.”
So we presume the screen is bigger than 4 inches, the thickness of the phone is less than 11 millimetres, the battery capacity is greater than 1500mAh, OS will be something newer than Android 2.3, and finally the price is less than 1000 yuan. The BYD executive later denied the company is releasing any android smartphone under their own brand name. They will continued to be an original design manufacturer (ODM).

With greater maturity and the openness of Android OS, more Chinese companies are producing their own brand of smartphones. During the past few months, we have already seen many Android-based phones, such as Xiaomi, Baidu Yi and K-Touch Cloud from Alibaba. BYD is a rapidly expanding ODM, supplying Nokia, Motorola, Huawei and many others cell-phones’ brands. Last year, they have shown their prototype tablet and smartphone in Hong Kong. So we still believe the company have high chances to enter the smartphone market under their own brand name, just exactly what the Taiwan company HTC has done before in 2006.
