Chinese Gaming Firm Offers Free Downloads of Angry Birds

Chinese mobile games provider Downjoy becomes the first authorized marketplace in China to distribute and market Angry Birds for Android devices, which can be downloaded directly from its site. This means that Android users in China do not need to get the ‘pirated’ versions of Angry Birds on their devices, just head to DownJoy’s special Angry Birds site: angrybirds.d.cn.

The great company behind Angry Birds, Rovio, has partnered with China-based mobile gaming portal, DownJoy, to give Chinese players a new avenue to download official versions of Angry Birds, including Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio, and the original Angry Birds. They are all free, ad-supported.

We all know that the Angry Birds game has been available in Apple’s App Store already, but there’s no official version available for download in China’s Android devices. The China-branded Android smartphones and tablets do not include the Android Market, they come with third-party ‘App store’ and provide unofficial versions of Angry Birds. So that’s why Rovio needs to work with Downjoy to provide the official version. Here’s what Downjoy spokeswoman said in a statement:

“In the past, other platforms that offered the Angry Birds game were all bootleg versions, but with this, Downjoy has worked through Rovio to provide an authorized official version of the game.”

What’s more, this partnership is part of Rovio’s strategy to achieve 100 million downloads of its Angry Birds game in mainland China. Late last month, the company reported 10 million of its 140 million downloads of the game had come from China, and that amazing stats proves that Angry Birds is very popular in the country, especially when we saw that carnival game booth in Guangzhou!

One more thing, Rovio plans on setting up a team in China to help develop Angry Birds games for the Chinese market, according to an earlier interview with the company’s chief marketing officer Peter Vesterbacka. Rovio also plans to release other versions of the game for the PC and lower-end feature phones.
