Bloody Incident Happened in Beijing Apple Store (video!)

This. Is. Sad. Here’s the story. Apple’s white iPhone 4 has been restocked today in Beijing Apple Store, and just like always, dozens of scalpers wait outside the store to get the white iPhone 4, and they were told to wait in line. However, the scalpers were later told that they are not allowed to go inside the store. So scalpers got pissed, and they got in a fight with the securities, and quarreled with some Apple store employees. At this time, an Apple Store employee (non-Chinese), John, came out from the store with a metal club and hit 4 people, including 2 young men and 2 middle age women. Then, John went back to the store. More scalpers got pissed and they smashed the glass door of the store, which costs about 300,000 yuan ($46,000). So this caused the store to temporarily shut down. Photos and a video after the break.

May 10th UPDATE: Here’s what Apple spokeswoman Carolyn Wu told AFP in a statement,

“The Apple Store Sanlitun was closed for several hours on Saturday after a group outside the store became unruly. The store team acted to protect themselves and our customers by closing the doors and preventing the group from entering. The safety of our customers and employees is our top priority.”

And the Global Times reported that Ding Wencheng (one of the injured customers), reached a 20,000-yuan ($3,000) settlement with the store for the injuries he suffered during the fracas.

May 9th UPDATE: CNN reports that a so-called scalper tried three times to cut into a long line of customers waiting to buy the white iPhone 4 at the Beijing Sanlitun Apple Store. Then three Apple security guards and an Apple retail manager attempted to escort the individual away from the store, but a shoving match resulted. After the situation got out of control, security guards locked the front door of the store. Unhappy customers smashed the front door to release their anger.

May 8th UPDATE: Store is back up at 10 a.m, with enhanced security measures. Customers could only enter the store through the another side of the glass door.

Apple Store’s glass door got smashed… All thanks to scalpers and ‘excited’ customers.

The police arrived the store to investigate the whole incident.

Customers are not allowed to enter the store, and for customers who were in the store, they need to exit the store from the back doors.

It’s like a mess!

Securities just stand at there to wait for further orders.

Bystanders were using their cellphones to take photos and videos of the terrible mess. They are not allowed to do so, but securities could not stop all of them.

It is very rare to see a police in green uniform appearing in Apple Store, since they will only appear if there’s a serious incident happened.

Cleaners arrived to clean up the mess, including blood stains on the floor. A signboard is put in front of the store, saying,

“Work in progress, sorry for any inconvenience. We are trying our best to improve the store.”

All 4 people are hospitalized right now and no money was paid by apple for medical purposes. The Apple store employee who beaten up these 4 people is nowhere to be found.

Bloodied Chinese.

Situation looks bad.

Looks like John has some great strength.

Store was closed for the rest of the day. Aww…

So this is what we see if the China Apple store refuses to sell white iPhones to scalpers.

Well maybe if “John” the mental apple employee didn’t come out with a metal bar and smash four people then the scalpers probably wouldn’t have destroyed the glass door….

I’m pretty sure nowhere in the apple employee manual does it authorise and condone violence towards customers. Worse, this John was a foreigner who attacked local Chinese with a metal weapon because of their behaviour. Chinese people don’t take too kindly to this kinda behaviour since its too similar to the European invaders a century ago. If lots of people protest against apple, then this might mean apple stores in China will be closed by the authorities since the govt doesn’t want any unrests or protests due to apple “craze”……

    Thanks “John”…..

Well how about these scalpers don’t sell other peoples hard work for a profit, John probably designed the white iphone hehe and he was pissed, but in all seriousness, he may have overreacted but what do you expect, he is in a position of authority and his employee are being assaulted by the very same people who are buying these products from you in order to sell them at a mark up. My personal opinion is to ban all people suspected of scalping from purchasing iPhone’s ipads or anything that they plan on selling to others. BTW @jcyin:disqus I am interested about how you talk about this one foreigner, and you talk about European invaders and how they invaded 100 years ago, but what about what Chinese people did to themselves? Cultural Revolution and great leap forward are two good examples or how about death by 1 thousand cuts?

There is no pictures or video of John ‘beating’ the Chinese people, couldn’t it also be that injury occurred when the rioters destroyed the window (to me most of the injuries look like cuts, glass cuts does a metal pipe?) Finally judging people on there race or the actions of there ancestors is xenophobia!

In summary I think if he did attack people and he used a metal pipe, than thats a big over reaction, but also think how these people have been provoked by the scalpers every day they are serving these people who go in and purchase all the products which makes it harder for genuine customers to get what they want at the price they should be paying! I honestly feel really sorry for the apple employees working for these stores they must be under a lot of pressure!

i agree with your point about the cultural revolution and the great leap forward. but that’s what the GOVERNMENT  did to the chinese people. in fact, stuff like that is banned in china so most people my generation probably don’t know anything about it… besides, it would have looked bad if ANYBODY (chinese or otherwise) came out of the store and beat up 4 people with metal club.

then again, it might have been because of that guy who tried to cut in line. then John only haad to beat up ONE person =.=

Don’t use double standard  to justified the “John”, what if this situation happens in USA( don’t say it wouldn’t as you think US is more civilized than China, cause I believe nothing is impossible )  please, wallimo, you are looking for excuse instead of reason. There is no justification for what John was doing is ” right “. Wrong is wrong , regardless in any cultures and nations. example, stealing is wrong, murder is wrong, sculpting is wrong, violence on it’s very own customers is DAMN WRONG. you actually want to justify your opinion by escalate the issue as it happens just because it’s in China, I am telling you, no matter John is foreigner or Chinese, for my standing port is no difference, because John reps Apple, you have a very typical narrow mind just as the most American do, that’s why there are so many wars in US history.

I wonder if you actually live in China. These scalpers deserve more than a metal club to the face. MUCH more. I actually live here and these types of people are the scum of the earth.

Scalping is like any sort of speculative business. It involves risk factors for those engaging in it. In a lawful society such business behaviour, loathsome as it may be, is not illegal. Nobody should take the law into their own hands and resort to violence, let alone store employees. Apple has itself to blame as it could easily address the problem of scalping with a store policy to limit purchase to only 1 unit per customer per visit and issue rainchecks to those customer who arrive only when the stock runs out. Let the scalper line up for their 1 unit per visit like any bona fide buyer. Rainchecks will also ensure late-coming customers 1 unit at official price when the store restocks. That way few scalpers will bother to go through the hassle for an unguaranteed profit!

Maybe “John” was not actually an Apple Store employee. If he was, Steve Jobs would personally want him sent to Siberia.

    • AaronD12

I’ll bet “John” doesn’t exist at all.

Nothing justifies employees resorting to violence against customers. Period. In the U.S a general rule is that employees aren’t allowed to physically stop or attack thiefs in order to avoid lawsuits. So how can any of you justify violence against the scalpers? Just because it’s in China and that the way they act appears uncivilised or “scum” like that they deserve to be beaten?

    • Anonymous

“appears” uncivilised? Yeah thats right, it’s all perfectly civilised here, it’s lovely.

I agree with you. Scalpers suck, but if they deserve to be punished, it should be by the law. Unfortunately, even in a big city like Beijing, the laws in China are pretty shady and not many police patrol the streets to arrest these people. Heck, most of the police wouldn’t even give a shit about scalpers. But whoever “John” is, he shouldn’t go on a rampage and beat a bunch of people up. Violence shouldn’t be justified. >:|

With luck, these ‘Scalpers” were also “Gold Farmers” and got exactly what they deserve.

Just like you said Jcyin, in the U.S. it’s a general rule, but this is China and U.S. laws, no matter how much they would help, don’t apply there.

First, Scalper do what they  do  so, they resell them, and that doesn’t give Apple’s John Authorization conducting violence to Scalper, there are many approach to solve this kind of issue. which are far better than the result, you see, this result is 4 people go to hospital , apple closes its store, and lose sales and damages. so no one is winner expect newspapers.
No one should conduct violence, even the authority. because where violence performed, will be more violence.

If every purchase linked with Photo ID, there would not be so many scalpers. Here is my rule:
1, customer needs show photo ID in order to purchase iPhone,
    2. one iPhone in one visit /a customer.
    3. Photo ID will be tagged into purchase system, as Maximum of purchase per person is 2 Units.
so , you see, problem solved.
