‘Egypt’ Gets Censored On Chinese Internet

Oh! Surprise! China has blocked the word “Egypt” from online searches and censored much of the comments, photos and news available online about the protests in the North African nation. What’s more, any search for the word “Egypt” on Chinese Twitter-like services run by Sina, Tencent and Sohu will return the error message: “Sorry, there are no relevant results.” And yes, they also blocked the word “Egypt” from being used in microblogging messages passed around by users. This is horrible, and looks like there’s a reason for it.

The Chinese government is always censoring stuff that are ‘not good’ for its citizens. If you are using the Chinese internet now, you can only see news on Egypt from state-authorized media who apparently have been allowed to report on the protests as long as they focus on the violence of the protesters instead of their cause. As for Sina Microblog, the “Egypt” word is totally banned. According to Reuters, Chinese websites were restricting comments on the protests against Egyptian President. If you really wish to know why the Chinese government is censoring Egypt, you may check out this photo. And this photo.
