China’s Homegrown Chips Maker Launches 40-NM Chip

40 NM Chip

Spreadtrum Communications Inc., a leading Chinese electronic-chip manufacturer launched a 40-Nanometer cell phone chip on Wednesday, which had made a remarkable move in China’s independent research and development of semiconductors.

The chief executive officer of the company, Li Liyou said, “The 40-NM chip was only 1/1,750 of the thickness of ordinary paper”, “The smaller 40-NM chip has higher performance while it consumes less power and the cost is lower”.

He added, the majority of worldwide cell phone chip manufacturers mainly relied upon 65 NM technologies, in which the latest launch 40-NM chip had marked a landmark in the country’s semiconductor industry, also indicating China’s homegrown chip makers are taking the lead of the world in this field.

Li said the product has already passed technological tests and is ready for commercial use, as orders for the chips are already coming from cell phone manufacturers in Beijing and Qingdao.
