Shanzhai Market Getting Banned in Shenzhen

Shanzhai iPhone Mall

There was a crackdown on Shanzhai phones factories last week in Shenzhen, the crackdown confiscated 4800 units of Shanzhai phones and 8000 units of Shanzhai hardwares and also arrested 9 people. But we don’t think the Shanzhai market will be doomed in this year.

Chris and I went to Huaqiang Bei in Shenzhen last week, we found there were many banners outside of some electronic malls saying “firmly aganist infringement and knockoff products”, however inside those mall, we still see a lot of knockoff phones around, except for knockoff iPhone were missing.

We believe the crackdown was began due to the appear of “SoPhone (The Best Knockoff iPhone)“, which is a machine imitated very closely to iPhone 4 and caused widely media reported. We are guessing the SoPhone had raise the concern on Shanzhai phone breaking the IPR laws, therefore Chinese government need to take action on them. Anyway, the crackdown doesn’t seem like to clean out the Shanzhai market because this is never an easy task.

As i’ve commented previously, there is a fundamental difference between shanzhai product and a counterfeit. The makers of shanzhai producers don’t set out to deceive the buyers.

As for what’s behind these raids, well, people can talk about IP laws, but what about the ordinary Chinese consumers? Surely the government has more to gain from being seen to protect its own consumers from deceptive (假冒伪劣) products than wiping out the (mostly) much-loved shanzhai industry….
